Passavant Area Hospital today issued a “Flu Alert” for individuals visiting the Hospital. The Alert was issued due to a consistent increase in the number of flu cases presented in the Emergency Department.

The Alert urges Hospital visitors to stay home if they have a fever, cough, sore throat, or other flu-like symptoms. In addition, women who are pregnant and must visit the Hospital should wear a mask and avoid anyone exhibiting flu-like symptoms. Masks are available at Hospital entrances.

Passavant officials said 94 percent of employees have received this year’s flu vaccination. Those employees who chose not to receive or who are unable to receive the vaccine are wearing masks.

The CDC is reporting widespread flu in Illinois. They recommend influenza vaccinations for people who have not yet been vaccinated this season and antiviral treatment as early as possible for people who get sick and are at high risk of flu complications.

To help prevent the spread of the flu, remember to practice the three C’s:

Clean – Wash your hands frequently.
Cover – Cover your cough or sneeze in the bend of your elbow.
Contain – Contain your germs. Stay home if you are sick.
