Volunteer Opportunities


Thank you for your interest in becoming a Passavant volunteer and giving back to our community. The following is a list of our current volunteer opportunities. If you see an area of service in which you would like to help out, please call our Volunteer Department at (217) 245-9541, ext 3199.

Please note: Individual on-the-job training by experienced volunteer or qualified hospital personnel will be provided for all volunteer positions.


Ambulatory Surgery

  • Description: Serve as a messenger, transport patients.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays (mornings begin at 8:00 a.m. / afternoons begin at 12:00 p.m.)
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, pleasant personality, and able to do a lot of walking. Confidentiality is a must.

Blood Bank

  • Description: Assist with registration of Blood Bank donors, serve as a messenger, make reminder telephone calls to potential blood donors
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Two days per month
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, and pleasant personality. Confidentiality is a must.

Clerical 

  • Description: Assemble printed material
  • Number of hours: Approximately 3
  • Frequency: Weekdays/as needed
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, and pleasant personality. Confidentiality is a must.

Gift Shop 

  • Description: Operate the Gift Shop in a professional manner in providing a service to patients, their families and the public.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays, evenings and weekends
  • Qualifications: Ability to handle business transactions efficiently, in a courteous, pleasant manner. Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, and pleasant personality. Confidentiality is a must.

Hospital Messenger/Flower Delivery 

  • Description: Serve as a messenger between the hospital departments and delivers flower arrangements to patients.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays (mornings begin at 9:00 a.m. / afternoons begin at 1:00 p.m.)
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, pleasant personality, and able to do a lot of walking. Confidentiality is a must.

Imaging

  • Description: Transfer patients to Imaging Department.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays: mornings begin at 7:00 a.m.
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, pleasant personality, and able to do a lot of walking. Confidentiality is a must.

Information Center 

  • Description: Assist the public by communicating the appropriate hospital information, give instructions and directions.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays (mornings begin at 8:00 a.m. / afternoons begin at 12:00 p.m./evenings begin at 3:30 p.m.)
  • Weekends (9:00 a.m. / evenings begin at 3:30 p.m.)
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, and pleasant personality. Volunteer must be able to give instructions and directions, and learn current computer program. Confidentiality is a must.

Laundry

  • Description: Fold and stack laundry as assigned
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays and weekends
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, pleasant personality, and be able to stand for prolonged time and perform routine tasks.

Oncology 

  • Description: Greet the patients, assist the doctors and nurses in preparing patient charts and getting patients ready for treatments. Serve as a messenger to Lab & Pharmacy and other departments as needed.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays (Tuesday and Thursday)
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, and pleasant personality. Confidentiality is a must.

Pastoral Care Office Volunteer

  • Description: Assist Pastoral Care Office as needed, filing, make phone calls.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 2
  • Frequency: Weekdays
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, and pleasant personality. Confidentiality is a must.

Patient Registration

  • Description: Deliver charts to departments, escort patients, make copies.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays (mornings begin at 8:00 a.m. / afternoons begin at 12 p.m.)
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, pleasant personality, and able to do a lot of walking. Confidentiality is a must.

Rehabilitation Services

  • Description: Serve as a messenger, re-stock booths, change linens.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, pleasant personality, and able to do a lot of walking. Confidentiality is a must.

Sewing Ladies

  • Description: Sew, make, mend, repair anything needed by hospital.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: 1st Thursday of each month, begin at 9:00 a.m.
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must possess sewing skills, be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, and pleasant personality.

Surgical Waiting Room 

  • Description: Relays phone messages between physicians and families.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Weekdays (mornings begin at 7:30 a.m. / afternoons begin at 11:30 a.m.)
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, and pleasant personality. Confidentiality is a must.

Wound Center Volunteer

  • Description: Serve as a messenger, filing.
  • Number of hours: Approximately 4
  • Frequency: Monday and Thursday afternoons
  • Qualifications: Volunteer must be neat, in good health, have positive attitude, pleasant personality, and able to do a lot of walking. Confidentiality is a must.

Patricia Huckabay is Employee of the Month

Passavant Area Hospital’s Employee of the Month is Patricia Huckabay. She is a clerk in the patient registration department and has been employed at Passavant five years. Her nomination from a grateful co-worker read, “Patricia is pleasant and friendly with everyone. She always has a smile. She always goes above and beyond creating a wonderful experience for every patient. She helps wherever needed and does anything without complaint. Patricia often stays when the department is short-staffed and has helped out with all shifts. Recently, she noticed a job that needed to be done. She took the initiative to discover what she could do to help. She followed up on each issue with progress and took time to learn. She also came up with a great idea to add notes to each visit so that everyone could view the work that had been done. Patricia is an asset to Passavant and Patient Registration. We are lucky to have her!” “As a patient registration clerk, I ensure patient insurance and demographic information is up-to-date. I create, update and maintain most outpatient and inpatient visits. In addition, I order laboratory, x-ray and other outpatient tests,” Patricia said. The care and compassion we provide here makes Passavant a fantastic place to work and an even better place to get the care you need,” added Patricia. Patricia resides in Jacksonville with her two children, Kyla and Ava. The Employee of the Month at Passavant receives eight hours off with pay, an Employee of the Month plaque, a close parking space for one month, gift cards for the Cafeteria and Gift Shop, a movie gift card, pen and pencil set, picnic blanket, flashlight/tool kit, Mason jar cup, umbrella, small cooler, lunch sack, drawstring tote, water bottle, notepad, flashlight key ring, coffee mug, and cup.
