Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehab

**At this time, the Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation program is open to Phase II patients only. **

If you are recovering from heart or lung surgery, a recent heart attack, or a recent acute onset of lung disease or angina, let the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Passavant help. The program consists of Phase II Rehab in which all exercises are monitored by a staff of registered nurses and an exercise physiologist certified in advanced cardiac life-support. A Phase III/Healthy Choices Program is also in place for those who wish to continue a maintenance program of aerobic exercises and strengthen their hearts and lungs.

Phase II Rehab

Phase II cardiopulmonary rehab is a structured and supervised outpatient exercise and educational program. Each session incorporates a variety of arm and leg activities including a 5-10 minute warm-up routine followed by aerobic exercise on the following equipment: three types of stationary bicycles, a rowing machine, arm pulleys, weights, treadmills, NuSteps and ellipticals. The exercise routine is designed to fit your needs and abilities, and your physician is sent an evaluation of your progress every 4 weeks.

You will be provided educational materials and classes on risk factors, anatomy and physiology, diet, stress, and medication.

Phase II hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with specific class times arranged on your first visit. The program usually lasts 12 weeks depending on your progress and insurance coverage. Medicare and most insurance plans cover all or most of the cost.

Phase III Rehab/Healthy Choices

After completing our Phase II program, you may continue on to Phase III. This phase, located in the same gym, is less structured and considered a maintenance program.

The Phase III/Healthy Choices program is available to those with a history of heart or lung disease who do not meet the program requirements of the Phase II program, friends and family of patients e in the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab Program, Passavant Hospital colleagues and volunteers and other members of the community wishing to improve their overall health and fitness. A physician order and medical clearance may be required before starting the program.

Phase III hours are from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. No appointment is needed for your exercise sessions in Phase III/Healthy Choices, as you will not be on the heart monitor and will be responsible for keeping track of your own exercise record. Blood pressure checks are offered weekly and as needed should you/we have a health concern. You will be expected to alert us with any concerns or changes to your condition prior to exercising.
