During Your Stay
During Your StayBed Assignment
Your bed assignment is based on several considerations, such as your age, your sex, and your medical condition. Patient Registration will try to place you in the type of room you request. However, please understand, it may not always be possible to immediately accommodate your request.
Housekeeping/Laundry
The Housekeeping/Laundry Departments provide a clean and safe environment for our patients, physicians, staff, and visitors. We clean rooms on a daily basis. If at any time you require fresh linens, please ask your nurse. In the event you have visitors when it is time for your room to be cleaned, they may be asked to leave for a few minutes so your room may be cleaned
Infection Control
While you are a patient at our hospital, for your protection and the protection of our employees, universal infection control precautions are used. This means that our employees may be wearing gloves, masks, gowns or goggles while caring for you. These safety measures are taken any time there is a possibility of an exposure to body fluids. Please do no let this frighten or upset you.
Lost and Found
During your stay, if you or one of your family members loses property, please check at the nurses' station on the unit. If you are still unable to locate the property, contact the nursing staff for assistance. If you find someone else's property, please have a nursing staff member send it to the Housekeeping Department so that it can be properly identified and returned to its owner. After discharge, if you are missing property, contact the Housekeeping Department at 217-245-9541 extension 3189.
Patient Education
Nursing Service administers a Patient Education program to hospitalized patients. In addition, health education materials such as booklets, pamphlets, etc., are available to you and your family. These materials may be used to learn more about your specific illness and ways of caring for yourself when you leave the hospital. A number of them are designed to give you information about how to stay well. Many of the materials and pamphlets may be taken home for future reference. Much of this material is available in the Community Health Information Center, located in the Sibert Library on the ground floor in the East Wing. If you want information on a certain topic, ask your nurse.
Three television channels are designated for patient educational programming. See the "Patient Education Television Guide" in your Patient Handbook.
Safety
When you need help, signal for the nurses. Please be careful when getting out of bed alone and walking to the bathroom. By pushing the nurse call button at your bedside, you signal the nurses' station for help. A call cord is located in the bathroom for you to signal the nurse when you need help or assistance to return to bed. If you should spill something or see something spilled, please avoid the area and notify your nurse immediately. Wear slippers or shoes for safety.
Any electrical equipment, such as hair dryers, radios, or shavers, brought from home must be checked by Plant Engineering. Contact the nursing staff to arrange for this equipment to be checked.
Security
Passavant Area Hospital is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all who enter our facility. All Passavant employees wear picture identification badges while on duty. Also, Passavant's closed circuit video monitoring systems consist of cameras both inside and outside the main campus that record activities in key areas inside the hospital and in the parking lots. All entrances to the hospital are locked at 9 p.m. and reopen at 6 a.m., except Outpatient and Emergency Department entrances.
Visitor escorts are available by request. For assistance, dial "O" and the hospital operator will contact a security guard.
Smoking
Since smoking is a barrier to fulfilling our mission as a healthcare provider, smoking is not allowed anywhere on the Passavant Area Hospital campus, including sidewalks, parking lots, and in automobiles. Smoking cessation information is available through our Educational Services Department, (217) 245-9541, extension 3296.
Valuables
You may want to keep a small amount of cash with you to pay for newspapers and items you might wish to purchase from the hospital Gift Shop. Please leave all other items of value, such as jewelry, watches, rings, etc., at home or send them home with a family member. If you wish, these items may be placed in the hospital safe and will be returned to you upon your discharge. The hospital is not responsible for the loss or damage to personal items you elect not to leave at home or in the safe at time of admission. Valuables may be withdrawn from the safe weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
